YEAR ONE | OCTOBER 30, 2020

It was March 9, 2020.

And the transformation was incredible.

Months of hard work, generous donations, and incalculable expectation culminated in a celebratory first pitch and a league matchup with Valley Christian at the new home for Village Christian Baseball in Sylmar.

“It was very exciting,” said Athletic Director Diana Putignano of that first varsity game. “There was a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to get there.”

The renovation of a new baseball field was one of the primary initiatives in the first year of the Legacy Campaign, Village’s three-year effort to raise $3.3 million.

After nearly a decade at Tujunga Little League (TLL) in Sunland, VCS was in search of a new home field for the program. A familiar site was available; the Colt field at the Sylmar Independent Baseball and Softball League’s complex in Sylmar, where Village had played prior to moving to TLL.

But there was a lot of work to do.

Both the outfield and infield grass had to be reseeded; the infield dirt needed replacing; a scoreboard had to be installed; a new pitching mound had to be built; and extensive repainting and refinishing had to be undertaken over a five-month period.

The backstop was repaired and a windscreen was added to the outfield fence.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the VCS community – both in donations and labor, the Crusaders took the field on that March afternoon ready to begin a new chapter.

“We have been blessed with tremendous support from the VCS family, and could not do this without you,” Putignano added. “While we were extremely disappointed that the spring season was cut short due to COVID, we have been thrilled to see our teams begin to get back on this beautiful new field in recent weeks. We don’t want to stop there, though, and we are continuing work to further improve the field.”

Over the summer, a new elevated steel scorer’s table was installed behind the backstop and the batting cages were reinforced. Currently, the bullpen is under reconstruction.

A huge thank you goes out to all of the project’s donors, parent volunteers that have worked on the field, and the VCS Booster Club for your incredible support, all of which will benefit our Middle and High School student-athletes for years to come.
